Where there’s a will, there’s a way
A pokemon fan fic by Chibi-Aussie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is my first time writing a Pokemon fanfic. It may turn out to be something that would appear in the "general" section of a fan fic page (one that is like a normal pokemon episode) or it may become an AAMRN (Ash and Misty Romance Novel). It all depends. I was going for a romance novel since I’m into that kind of stuff. I’m trying my hardest to keep pikachu and the other pokemon "neutral" genders. Like for example calling Pikachu an "it" instead of he or she. Hey, it’s harder than it sounds! But meowth is obviously a guy. You can tell by the voice. I hope you all like it, and can give me some feed back by e-mailing me. I love getting e-mails, as long as they’re positive! Flames are okay too, as long as you aren’t too harsh. My feelings are hurt or brought up easily, so I am either easily hurt or easily pleased! If you have an archive and would like to post up my ‘fic (if you think it meets your standards), I’d be glad to receive an e-mail from you to ask for my permission to post it up! Okay, here goes!
Chapter one
Incident on Mindso hill
The sun shone bright that afternoon as the three, "PIKA!!" excuse me, four travelers continued their pokemon journey.
"So, exactly where are we Brock?" asked Ash.
"How should I know? Pikachu poured Ketchup on the map and ate it! It really did mean it when it said it was hungry," Brock replied to his friend.
"Pi pika pikachu (sorry, but there was nothing else to eat)."
"It’s okay Pikachu. We can find our way without a map!" stated Ash boldly.
"Okay? OKAY?! We’ve been wandering this forest for two whole weeks! I’m starving! I can barely walk another step. I’ve gone without food for three days! All we have to eat is a bottle of ketchup!" complained Misty.
"Pika chu pika pi pika! (no ones eating my ketchup but me!)"
"I know, I’m pretty hungry myself. Well, you seem well enough to be able to yell," stated Ash.
"Shut up! I didn’t ask for any comments right now!" retorted Misty.
"It has been a while since we last ate, hasn’t it?" said Brock. Suddenly his stomach growled. All of them formed large sweatdrops. "Heheheh, there has to be some food around here somewhere," said Brock as he looked around.
"Pi! (Hey!)"
"What is it Pikachu? Do you see something?" asked Ash.
"Pi pika pika chu pi chu! (look, there might be a town over there!)"
"Hey, you’re right! Good job Pikachu!" praised Ash. Throughout the time that Ash had been with Pikachu, he learned to understand what Pikachu was saying.
"What did Pikachu say, Ash?" Brock asked him.
"It said there might be a town over that hill!"
"Yeah! Let’s go check it out! Come on!" cried Misty happily. They all raced up the hill, despite how tired they were. When they had finally reached the top they looked on in joy as they saw the large, sparkling town below them.
"All right!" they cheered.
"Great job, Pikachu!" said Misty.
"Pikachu! (Yeah!)" it said as it held it’s hand up in a victory sign.
"I can’t wait to have something decent to eat! I ran out of food, so I’ll have to go shopping," stated Brock.
"Whatever you say, let’s get going! I gotta check out the Pokemon Center!" said Ash.
"I can’t wait to take a nice, long, relaxing bath then a nap!" said Misty joyfully as she clasped her hands together. Just then she had a sharp shock go through her head, and began to feel sort of light-headed.
"All right then, let’s get going!" said Ash as he, Brock and Pikachu started down the hill. Misty stood there shaking her head to get rid of the pain, but that didn’t help at all. "Come on, Misty!" said Ash as he grabbed her hand and the four of them ran down the hill. When they had almost gotten to the bottom her headache got worse and she began to slow down. "Misty, hurry up!" called Ash when he realized that she was starting to drag behind them, though he had a firm grip on her hand.
"Pika pi! (you can make it!)"
"I can’t...run...anymore," she said dizzily. The trio slowed down and lowered their pace to a walk. Ash let go of Misty’s hand as she put her hands on the sides of her head. Soon she was beginning to drift farther and farther away from Ash, Brock, and Pikachu, who didn’t even notice her. After a mere minute or so of walking the pain became unbearable as she blacked out and fell unconscious onto the grass. Ahead, the three didn’t even notice that she was gone. Ash had struck up a conversation.
"It’ll sure be great to be back in the city. Right Misty! Misty?"
"Pika pi pikachu! (Ash, look behind you!)" cried Pikachu, tugging on the bottom of Ash’s jacket, pointing behind them.
"Huh?" Both Ash and Brock turned around. They both stopped dead in their tracks when they saw Misty on the ground, not moving.
"Misty!" the both shouted. They darted back to where she lay on the ground.
"Aah! Misty! Misty, get up!" yelled Ash as he shook her frantically.
"We have to get her to a hospital, and fast!" said Brock.
"But how? I’m sure she’s too heavy to carry!" stated Ash as he looked down at her.
"Well, we won’t know until we try," said Brock almost uncertainly. Ash attempted to pick Misty up, and she was surprisingly light. Lighter than he thought. It may have been due to the loss of food, he thought to himself.
"Are you sure you’re strong enough to carry her all the way to the hospital, Ash?" asked Brock surprisingly as Ash carefully picked her up.
"Probably not the whole way, but we’ll see." The three of them made it to the hospital in records’ time. When they tried to open the doors, they found out they were locked.
"How can a hospital be locked?" screamed Ash.
"Pi pikachu pika (maybe today’s a holiday.)," suggested Pikachu.
"No, they’re just not open on Thursdays," Brock told the two of them.
"Out of all the days in a week, why today?" whined Ash.
"Pikachu pi chu pika pi (we can always try the Pokemon Center)."
"Brilliant deduction! Off to the Pokemon Center!" cried Ash. They dashed in the direction of the easy-to-spot center. "Just hang on Misty, we’re almost there," Ash thought to himself as he looked down at the lifeless figure in his arms. Just as were about to reach the Pokemon center, two figures jumped in front of them.
"Prepare for trouble!"
"And make it double!"
"To protect the world--"
"Out of the way!" shouted Brock as they dashed through the two people, knocking them to the ground.
"Boy, they sure were in a hurry!" laughed James with one of his goofy smiles. Jesse growled and smacked him on the head with a gigantic hammer.
"We don’t need any of your stupid jokes right now!" shouted Jesse into his ear.
"You two bubble brains let that Pikachu get away again! The two of you can’t do anything right!" yelled Meowth as it scratched the two across the face.
"How dare you ruin my perfection!" screamed Jesse as she grabbed Meowth by the tail, swung him around, then threw him against a tree. "Don’t worry I’ve devised another plan. Fool-proof, I guarantee it!" said Jesse proudly.
"Just don’t fool yourselves by your own plan," mumbled Meowth angrily.
"Almost there!" They struggled to get to the Center as fast as they could, without having any accidents along the way. They made it there safely and rushed inside. Brock ran up to the counter with Ash close behind. Sure enough, there was Nurse Joy typing at her computer.
"May I help you?" she asked politely. As always, Brock went into his pretty-girl-mode and turned all red. Then he remembered what they were there for and got serious.
"A friend of ours has passed out and the hospital is closed. Can you help us?" questioned Brock.
"Well, this is a hospital that’s really only for Pokemon...." she trailed off into thought.
"Please Nurse Joy, you have got to help us. There’s no where else to go and we don’t even know what’s wrong! I know you can help us, so please," pleaded Ash.
"I’ll see what I can do." She went over to her computer and began typing once again. "We need a stretcher for a, um, 10-12 year old girl. STAT!" Soon two Chanseys came out of one of the rooms wheeling a stretcher down the hall. When they stopped in front of the desk Ash carefully placed Misty on it and they rolled her into the general patient room.
"I’ll let you know how she’s doing in a while," said Nurse Joy as she too entered the room. The three nodded their heads and sat down on the couch that was in the waiting room. The red light went on above the door and they all waited. Ash and Brock let their pokemon out of their pokeballs to run around and exercise a bit while they waited.
"So, exactly what town are we in Brock?" asked Ash.
"I think it’s called emerald-sky city, greatly known for it’s wide variety of grass and flying-type Pokemon. Not to mention it’s spectacular scenery," replied Brock.
"Great! I can’t wait to catch more pokemon! The only grass-type pokemon I have is Bulbasaur. And Pidgeotto is my only flying pokemon, besides Charizard. I would have another if I still had Butterfree. I need to catch up. Gary probably has over fifty pokemon and I only have Charizard, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Pidgeotto, Primeape even though I haven’t gotten it back yet, Krabby, and Muk. I haven’t caught anything since," wailed Ash in defeat.
"Pikachu pi pika chu pika pi! (Don’t worry Ash you’ll catch something!)"
"I’m sure you’ll catch something here. This place has more flying and grass-type pokemon than any other place on earth!" exclaimed Brock.
"Great! Uh-oh, I’d better go to the Pokemon shop and buy some more pokeballs. I kinda ran out, except for one," stated Ash as he held out his last available pokeball.
"Hey, I’ll come with you! Why don’t we go after we eat something first," suggested Brock.
"Pika pikachu! (Great I’m starving!)"
"I think I’ll wait here a little bit longer when we’re done eating. I’m sure Misty wouldn’t be too thrilled if we left without her," Ash told Brock.
"You’re right," laughed Brock. "But that won’t stop me from being hungry! Why don’t you stay here while I get the food. So, what do you feel like having?" asked Brock with a waiter-tone-of-voice.
"Just some fried rice will be fine," Ash replied.
"Pi pika pikachu pi chu pika (I’ll have some apples with extra ketchup),"
"Pikachu wants some apples, and better pick up another bottle of ketchup along the way," said Ash with a smile.
"Gotcha! Be right back! Oh, I’d better call back my pokemon. You never can be too careful. Geodude, Onyx, Zubat, return!" In a flash of red light the three pokemon returned to their pokeballs safe and sound. "Bye!" Brock ran out the door in search of a restaurant. Ash laid back against the couch and sighed. Pikachu jumped on his head and smiled.
"Pikachu, pi pika chu! (Don’t worry, she’ll be okay!)"
"I know but...hey! What makes you think I was thinking about Misty?!" asked Ash as he face began to turn a light pink.
"Pi pika pika (It’s rather obvious)."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Pi pika pika pikachu pi chu (You get this dreamy look on your face like you’re having a daydream)."
"No I don’t! Why would I be thinking about Misty?!" Ash’s face turned bright red as he pulled up the collar of his jacket.
"Pika pi pikachu! (‘cause you like her!)"
"Aaah! No I don’t!!"
"Chu! (Do!)"
"Don’t!"
Pikachu paused for a second, "Pika! (Don’t!)"
"Do!"
"Pika pi! (you don’t like her!)"
"Yes I do! Wha--? I didn’t say that! If you say anything Pikachu..."
"Pikachu pika pika pi (don’t worry, she can’t understand me)."
"Ha ha! She’ll never know!"
"Pika pikachu pikachu pi pika (so you’re saying you do like her)?" Pikachu grinned almost evily.
"Now I never said...what I mean is...." Ash couldn’t think of anything to say.
"Pi pikachu pika pi chu pika pikachu (If I don’t tell her, she’ll find out eventually by the way you act)."
"The way I...act??" Ash had no idea what Pikachu was talking about.
"Pi pika pika chu (she may already know)."
"Oooh, that’s just great. Wonder how she’s gonna treat me now." Ash pulled his hat down over his face. When he looked up he saw ALL of his pokemon snickering at him.
"Bulba bulbasaur! (So Ash likes Misty!)"
"Squirtle squirt! (I’ve got to tell her!)"
"Pidgeo! (Good idea!)"
"Char char! (No, wait!)"
"Pikachu pi. Pika pikachu pi pika pikachu. (Charizard’s right. Ash will be hurt if you tell Misty anything.)"
"(You guys are no fun. We’re just trying to help their relationship, that’s all.)" declared Squirtle and Bulbasaur.
"Pidge pidgeo geo pidge (but we may ruin the relationship they have now,)" Pidgeotto told them. Squirtle and Bulbasaur exchanged disappointed glances then sighed in defeat.
"Squirtle squirtle, squirt (All right, we give up)."
"Pi! Pika pi pikachu pika (Good! Now let’s hope Misty gets better)." The group broke up and the "smaller" pokemon (all but Charizard) started up a small game of tag while Charizard began to nap.
"What was that all about Pikachu?" Ash asked his small electric friend.
"Pika pi (Oh, nothing)." Ash raised an eyebrow at it, not believing it’s response. Just then Brock came back, breathing heavily, with the food.
"Whoa, you did mean it when you said you’d be right back!" joked Ash.
"I got...you’re food....Now let’s eat..." Brock sat down at a nearby table and pulled the contents out of the bag.
"Let’s see," Ash started sorting out the food. "Seven apples and a new bottle of ketchup for Pikachu..." Ash handed Pikachu the apples and ketchup.
"Pika! (Yum!)"
"Here’s my fried rice...and the rest must be yours Brock. I’ll be right back, I’m just gonna grab a can of pop from the pop machine. Want one?"
"No thanks, I’ll be fine with this bottle of water I bought," Brock said as he waved off the offer.
"Suit yourself." Ash made his way to the machine and pulled some change out of his pocket. The change clinked inside the machine as he made his selection. He took his drink and was about to leave when he noticed he was right next to the door of one of the rooms. He decided to take a look through the window. Inside were all types of instruments that doctors would use. And of all different shapes and sizes as well. He recognized Nurse Joy in the room and she was standing in front of one of the beds. When she moved away he looked at what was on the bed. To his surprise there lay Misty.
"How’d she get into this room?" he thought to himself. Her head was bandaged and it looked like she was sweating, but she was also terribly pale. He took a few steps back and looked above the door. To his dismay, the room she laid in was the emergency room. "The...emergency room?! It’s that serious? I hope she gets better soon." He slowly turned away from the door and walked back to the table.
"That took a while. Have trouble deciding on what to drink?" questioned Brock.
"Uh, yeah. Now let’s eat," replied Ash a little uneasily.
"Is something bothering you Ash?" asked Brock with a bit of concern.
"I just hope Misty gets better, that’s all." Pikachu was about to say something but didn’t want to embarrass Ash too much that day. Besides, eating was much better than talking. Brock noticed that Ash wasn’t as cheerful or perky as he usually was. He slowly ate his rice when he would normally be wolfing it down like there was no tomorrow.
"Now I know something else is bothering you. Did you see something back there?" Brock asked again.
"Huh? Well..."
"Pikachu pi! (come on tell us!)" said Pikachu with a mouthful of food.
"Okay. You know how Misty was in the ‘general patients’ room?" Ash started.
"Yes..."
"Well, when I was back by the machines, I saw a door with a window in it. So I looked through the window and Joy was in there." Brock and Pikachu hung onto Ash’s every utterance. "When she moved away from the bed I saw Misty in there. Her head was bandaged and she was as white as the bed she was on." Ash looked down at the table, avoiding Pikachu and Brock’s glances.
"A-are you sure it was her? Maybe it was someone else--" suggested Brock.
"No, I’m positive it was her. Trust me. You can even go and check yourself if you want." A sad, solemn expression crossed Ash’s face and Brock settled down. Pikachu stopped eating to hear the conversation. Even the Pokemon that were eating Brock’s homemade food were frozen stiff from what they heard. Everyone sat for a few moments in silence, just eating instead of asking and answering any further questions.
Just then they heard a door open. Everyone looked up and saw nurse Joy appear from out of the ER. Her expression was sad yet blank, and she wasn’t smiling. Ash almost instincively got up and rushed over, while Brock slowly stood from his seat taking as much time as possible, because it didn’t look like Joy’s reply was going to be a very good one. Pikachu was just behind Ash when they reached Joy.
"How is she?" demanded Ash. Joy frowned in return. He knew something bad was happening to Misty. He could feel it.
